Giralte de Bruselas et al., The Main Retable at Oviedo Cathedral: Detail, the Assumption

As in some Assumptions in Spain and its colonies, Mary rises on a crescent moon. Earlier images have her lifted up by angels; in later ones, she rises on a cloud without assistance. In this transitional example, the angels merely touch her mantle.

Bishop Valeriano Ordóñez de Villaquirán kneels in the lower left corner. It was he who ordered the construction of the retable, although he died during the first year of its construction.
